Ramsdale’s fall from prominence follows a series of competitive setbacks. At Arsenal, he lost his place to David Raya in 2023, prompting a transfer. Last season, while on loan at Newcastle United, he was unable to dislodge Nick Pope as the starting goalkeeper; Newcastle chose not to exercise their option to sign him permanently. Reports suggest Ramsdale was tired of frequently moving clubs and was prepared to stay and compete for a place at Southampton, especially given contractual clauses that reportedly make his high wages manageable even in the lower division.
Despite his limited role, Ramsdale remains part of Southampton’s official 25-man squad registered with the Football League. There is speculation within the club that injury to Peretz could see Ramsdale called upon as the immediate replacement, indicating that his current status as fourth-choice might be temporary.
