Shopify has embraced artificial intelligence (AI) as a core component of its business strategy, setting an example of how a large company can integrate the technology throughout its operations. Unlike many established firms that have adopted a cautious approach to AI, Shopify, under CEO Tobias Lütke, has made AI usage a fundamental expectation for its employees and product development.
In early 2025, Lütke issued an internal memo mandating the use of AI in daily workflows and project prototyping. Performance evaluations began to include assessments of employees’ AI engagement, and hiring teams needed to demonstrate that roles could not be automated before recruiting new personnel. This marked a significant departure from the typical corporate stance of encouraging experimentation with AI tools without making them compulsory.
Shopify first introduced AI-powered customer tools in 2023, including an AI assistant named Sidekick designed to help retailers optimize their online storefronts. Internally, the company has applied AI to enhance efficiency and innovation across its business. Despite these advances, Shopify’s stock price has faced challenges, falling more than 15% this year amid broader declines in the software sector. The shares currently trade at approximately 57 times forward earnings, reflecting high growth expectations.
Financially, the company has demonstrated strong expansion. Revenue grew from around $7 billion in 2023 to projections exceeding $15 billion for 2026, supported by increased market share both domestically and internationally. Concurrently, Shopify has reduced its workforce substantially, from about 11,600 employees at the end of 2022 to roughly 7,600 at the end of last year, signaling a shift toward greater automation and operational streamlining.
Looking ahead, Shopify is positioning itself for a future centered on "agentic commerce," where AI agents autonomously search for and recommend products to consumers. To facilitate this, Shopify is developing an accessible product catalog for AI developers—including OpenAI and Anthropic—to integrate into their recommendation systems. Shopify President Harley Finkelstein noted on a recent earnings call that AI-generated traffic and orders on its platform tripled year over year during the second quarter, underlining early signs of success.
Lütke has expressed confidence in the company’s AI-driven transformation, stating that AI-powered agents have become extensions of employee creativity, enabling faster and more innovative product developments. While the long-term impact of Shopify’s full-scale AI adoption remains to be seen, the company’s approach is viewed as a key indicator of AI’s potential to reshape business operations across industries.
