On the morning of Wednesday, August 28, 2024, a catastrophic glacial collapse triggered a massive flash flood in Nepal’s Langtang National Park, about 35 miles north of Kathmandu near the Nepal-Tibet border. At approximately 8:37 a.m., a large section of ice and rock, roughly 2,000 feet wide, broke away from a glacier on the northern slopes of Tsangbu Ri, a Himalayan peak at an elevation near 17,000 feet above sea level.
