Mary Steenburgen, the acclaimed actress known for her long-standing career in film and television, recently shared insights into how she enjoys spending a typical Sunday in Los Angeles, offering a glimpse into her daily routines and favorite activities.
The Arkansas native moved to California in 1977 after securing a role in “Goin’ South,” a film directed by and starring Jack Nicholson. The opportunity marked a turning point in her career, providing her with a foothold in the industry and a chance to learn from established talents. Although Steenburgen spent part of the 1980s raising her children in Ojai with then-husband Malcolm McDowell, she has consistently maintained her residence in Los Angeles, where she now lives with husband Ted Danson. The couple has collaborated on several projects, including the Netflix series “A Man on the Inside.” More recently, Steenburgen filmed “The Dink,” an Apple TV comedy that centers on her passion for pickleball.
Steenburgen’s Sunday begins early, waking between 5 and 6 a.m. for meditation and mental exercises, including puzzle games such as the New York Times Spelling Bee, Genius, and Queen Bee. When schedules permit, she and Danson spend mornings rehearsing lines for their acting roles.
By mid-morning, Steenburgen dedicates time to her garden, which she cultivated largely by hand on a hillside property. Seeking expert advice from Armstrong Garden Centers helped her select appropriate plants that thrive in the area’s terrain.
Pickleball emerges as a central theme in Steenburgen’s leisure time. She aims to play at least two hours a day, often joining friends at private courts or public venues like Pickle Pop on the Third Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pickleball Center. Recently, she hosted members of London’s prominent Lemon Pickleball club, sharing the Southern California lifestyle, including a dinner featuring authentic Mexican cuisine prepared by a local family who regularly serves meals at a Santa Monica coffee shop.
Meals throughout the day are characterized by a focus on health and family. Brunch often takes place at Kreation, a spot known for nutritious options, and special outings include visits to the Magic Castle, a private club offering magic shows with occasional weekend brunches that welcome children.
Afternoons are reserved for outdoor activities with the family’s Australian Shepherd, whom Steenburgen describes as a calming presence both for other dogs and people. The couple enjoys leisurely walks around Santa Monica, allowing their dog to interact with other animals and locals.
Evenings frequently involve breakfast-for-dinner meals such as poached eggs on toast or creamed spinach, sometimes complemented by healthy takeout from Goop Kitchen. The day concludes with shared television viewing in bed, notably the British game show “Would I Lie to You?,” a program favored for its humor. Steenburgen also reflects on the significance of the television series “Cheers,” recalling its role in her personal life during challenging times and the profound impact of showrunner Jimmy Burrows, a close friend of Danson’s who recently passed away.
Steenburgen’s Sunday routine highlights a balance of mindfulness, physical activity, family connection, and professional dedication within the vibrant backdrop of Los Angeles.
