Rising temperatures across the United Kingdom are prompting homeowners to consider measures that can help their properties withstand increasingly frequent heatwaves. Record-breaking heat in recent years, including 2025 which the Met Office identified as the hottest year on record, has highlighted the need for adaptations to homes largely built to retain heat rather than repel it.
Data from the Met Office shows that the hottest days in southern England are now on average 4.5°C warmer compared to the late 20th century, underscoring a shift in climate norms. Mike Kendon, a climate information scientist at the Met Office, has noted that the climate Britain experienced throughout the 20th century can no longer be considered the norm. However, the UK's housing stock is predominantly older, with some of the oldest constructions in Europe. The Home Builders Federation estimates that 78 percent of homes were built before 1980 and almost 40 percent before 1946, raising challenges for adequate adaptation.
To combat indoor overheating, three main technologies are being recommended: air conditioning systems, heat pumps, and solar panels.
Air conditioning offers a straightforward and effective way to cool homes during heatwaves. While a standard single-room installation typically costs around £2,000, outfitting an entire house with ducted central air systems can increase costs fivefold. Despite advances in energy efficiency, air conditioning remains relatively energy-intensive, translating to higher electricity bills during use.
Heat pumps have gained attention, particularly as replacements for gas boilers, but they also double as cooling devices. They operate by expelling warm indoor air and circulating cooler air, similarly to air conditioning units. Heat pumps are generally more energy-efficient and cheaper to run than traditional AC, especially models with high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER2) ratings. However, installation can be costly—ranging from £8,000 to £30,000 depending on the system and home size—and may require upgrades to existing heating infrastructure. Government grants of up to £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme can help offset these costs. Additionally, heat pumps provide year-round climate control by heating in winter and cooling during summer months, potentially reducing fuel bills if the home is properly insulated.
Solar panels complement cooling technologies by generating renewable electricity to power them during daylight hours. Though installation is not feasible for all housing types, solar arrays produce free energy even in less sunny conditions and can help reduce running costs of air conditioning or heat pump systems during heatwaves. Surplus electricity can be fed back into the National Grid, and modern systems may include battery storage for use during nighttime or cloudy periods. Installation prices vary, but for an average four-bedroom home, costs have been cited around £9,000 with estimated annual energy savings close to £880.
Despite the upfront expenses, experts advise homeowners to consider these technologies as investments that can lower energy consumption, reduce bills, and increase property value. Given the variety of factors including home age, insulation, and layout, consulting with renewable energy specialists is recommended to determine the most effective and cost-efficient solutions for individual properties.
