Nico Hulkenberg is embracing a unique atmosphere at the Sepang International Circuit as it hosts the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia for the first time. The 39-year-old Audi driver, who first earned Formula One World Championship points at Sepang 16 years ago, praised the event organizers for successfully recreating the distinct Bahraini ambiance at the venue.
“This year, the circuit has been transformed to reflect Bahrain’s character, from the paddock environment to the furniture and staff,” Hulkenberg said. “It’s a great job from the organizers.”
Hulkenberg made his debut at Sepang in 2010 while driving for Williams, starting eighth and finishing in 10th place. He continued to compete at the circuit annually until 2017 and remains familiar with its layout and challenges. He described the track as technical and flowing, featuring a mix of medium- and high-speed corners alongside several low-speed turns. He also noted the circuit’s rough tarmac, which can test tire durability, and the potential for sudden monsoon showers on race day.
So far this season, Hulkenberg has secured three top-10 finishes but is aiming to break into the points again this weekend. After finishing 11th in Baku, where his team introduced significant car updates, he expressed cautious optimism. “We definitely need to avoid mistakes,” he said. “Our issues at Baku were mainly related to straight-line speed, which is especially critical here, so I believe we can be competitive and get back into the points.”
As the Bahrain Grand Prix unfolds on Malaysian soil, Hulkenberg’s experience and the recent car improvements could play key roles in his efforts to climb the standings in this distinctive setting.
