The Ministry of Municipality’s Public Cleanliness Department conducted a series of beach clean-up campaigns across several coastal locations in Qatar as part of the World Cleanup Day 2026 activities. The initiatives took place at Zekreet, Simaisma Family Beach, Abu Samra, Ras Abu Fontas, and Al Jasasiya, drawing participation from a diverse group of 469 volunteers including representatives from government agencies, civil society organizations, private-sector groups, schools, and local community members.
The clean-up efforts yielded the collection of approximately 1,603 kilograms of waste, encompassing general refuse, recyclable materials, wood, bulky debris, and marine grass. The campaigns aimed to foster environmental awareness and promote a culture focused on maintaining clean beaches and the protection of coastal ecosystems.
Mohamed Faraj al-Kubaisi, Assistant Director of the Public Cleanliness Department, emphasized that such events play a crucial role in reinforcing partnerships within the community and increasing awareness about environmental sustainability. He highlighted the broad involvement from multiple sectors as evidence of a growing collective commitment to environmental stewardship and support for the Ministry’s objectives of achieving a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
Similarly, Hajj al-Kubaisi, head of the Beaches and Islands Section, noted the campaigns’ success both in terms of volunteer turnout and the volume of waste collected and sorted. He stated that the Beaches and Islands Section continues to run awareness programs and field operations throughout the year to preserve the cleanliness of the nation’s beaches and islands. Hajj al-Kubaisi also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of numerous government bodies, private organizations, educational institutions, youth centers, and individual volunteers, which he identified as key to the campaign’s effectiveness. He underlined the importance of coordinated community participation in raising recognition of the need to conserve natural resources.
Contributing entities included the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change; the Friends of the Municipality team from Al Shehaniyah Municipality; the municipalities of Al Shamal, Al Rayyan, and Al Daayen; along with the Public Parks Department, the Mechanical Equipment Department of the Ministry of Municipality, Al Jumailiyah Youth Centre, Simaisma Youth Centre, Lavalet Company, and students from Lubaba Bint Al-Harith Primary School for Girls. These collaborative efforts underscore the broad commitment across Qatar to environmental protection and the upkeep of coastal areas.
