A lake in Masiano, a small village northwest of Florence, has become the focus of intense interest following reports of a crocodile-like creature spotted partially submerged in the water. A photograph taken by a lake maintenance worker showing the creature’s eyes and snout breaking the surface has drawn media attention, visitors, and drone enthusiasts to the area, dividing residents between those who believe in the creature’s existence and those who remain skeptical.
The lake’s owner, Vivai Reali, enlisted the help of his brother, Maurizio Bartolini, who subsequently alerted local police. The theory is that a juvenile crocodile, possibly kept as a pet, escaped into the lake during floods that affected the region two or three years ago. The lake, which reaches depths of up to 15 meters, is filled with fish and surrounded by steep banks and strong fencing, conditions thought to be favorable for the animal’s survival while preventing its escape.
Alessandro Pieri, a local nursery owner, described a shift in the creature’s behavior, saying it has adapted to its environment and now acts more like a fish. He added that it poses no threat and should be left undisturbed.
Despite numerous search efforts, including the deployment of photo traps and a metal cage by Olivier Behra, a French crocodile catcher brought in for the investigation, the animal has yet to be conclusively located. Behra plans to return in September when lower water levels may facilitate a more thorough search.
Skepticism remains among some locals. Tommaso Pinferi, a nearby car body shop owner, called the sighting a hoax, suggesting the photograph could have been digitally altered. Another resident, Domenico Petrolo, dismissed the crocodile claims altogether, attributing sightings to overactive imaginations following drinks.
The initial sighting prompted the maintenance worker to file an official report with the carabinieri; authorities warned of penalties, including a possible jail term and fines, for creating a false alarm. Police reportedly sent the photograph to a Florence-based artificial intelligence research unit, which deemed the image authentic, though officials have refrained from commenting further.
In the meantime, the local community has embraced the legend stemming from the sighting. A nearby restaurant has introduced a “Masiano Crocodile” cocktail, and a local amateur football team has adopted the name “Masiano Crocodiles,” with one player famously scoring a penalty while dressed in a crocodile costume.
