Ben Hunt has strongly rejected claims that Brisbane Broncos players are revolting against coach Michael Maguire or refusing to sign new contracts if he remains in charge next season. The Broncos, who are currently sitting 13th on the ladder following seven consecutive losses, have been the subject of speculation regarding internal discord and concerns over Maguire’s leadership.
Hunt, along with teammate Tom Duffy, both recently committed to contract extensions, offered a firm defense of Maguire ahead of the Broncos' upcoming match against Cronulla Sharks at Suncorp Stadium. Hunt signed a one-year extension through the 2027 season, while Duffy agreed to a two-year deal. Both players credited Maguire with creating a clear and honest environment, emphasizing that the coach’s direct communication style is appreciated within the squad.
“I re-signed assuming ‘Madge’ (Maguire) would be the coach,” Hunt said. “He was the one who approached me and asked if I wanted to go around again. It was a no-brainer. I’m excited to be here.”
The reports suggesting a lack of confidence in Maguire come amid a difficult season for the defending premiers, who won the NRL title last year, ending a 19-year drought. Speculation has also intensified as star prop Payne Haas prepares to leave Brisbane for South Sydney next season, which has fueled concern over the club's direction.
Hunt dismissed the notion that players are not backing their coach, pointing to the effort shown during their recent 24-18 loss to the Sydney Roosters. “If you look at the game and the effort we put in, we fought hard,” he said. “The boys are fighting for him.”
Duffy, who joined Brisbane from the North Queensland Cowboys last year, echoed these sentiments. The 22-year-old highlighted the positive culture fostered by Maguire and praised the coach’s straightforward feedback style as a key strength, helping players understand their roles and expectations.
Despite criticism over Hunt's age, with the 37-year-old preparing for what would be his 19th NRL season, the veteran playmaker expressed confidence in his ability to continue contributing to the team. “I love playing footy and I still feel like I can play on,” he said.
While the Broncos face on-field challenges and off-field speculation about coaching stability, Hunt and Duffy’s public support underlines a faction of players committed to Maguire’s leadership as the club seeks to regain its form.
