Reigning world surfing champion Molly Picklum is poised to defend her title as the World Surf League (WSL) season enters its final stages, despite a challenging campaign marked by inconsistent results. The 23-year-old surfer from Australia’s Central Coast currently holds the yellow leader’s jersey with two events remaining in the 2026 tour.
Picklum’s defense began with a runner-up finish at Bells Beach in April, where she was defeated by Gabriela Bryan. However, the remainder of the season saw a series of quarter-final and semi-final eliminations, along with some earlier round exits. This inconsistency left her season hanging in the balance as Australian surfers struggled to secure victories after the first three legs of the tour left Australia.
That changed recently when Picklum delivered a decisive win in Portugal, propelling her three places up the WSL rankings to the top spot. She will don the yellow jersey for the upcoming 11th leg of the tour, scheduled to start Saturday at Cloud 9, off the east coast of Siargao Island in the Philippines. With only the Cloud 9 event and the season finale at Pipeline in Hawaii remaining, Picklum is well positioned to claim back-to-back world titles if she maintains her recent form.
Reflecting on her ascent to the top of the rankings, Picklum expressed satisfaction with overcoming the difficulties earlier in the year. “It obviously feels so damn, damn good and it is obviously way sweeter when the journey has been a little tougher,” she said. “It’s such a good space that I am in, just trusting in myself and my surfing.”
The 2026 season also marks a return to the WSL’s traditional points-based system for determining the world champion. Unlike last year’s format, which concluded with a head-to-head showdown in Fiji, this year’s title is based on the surfer’s best nine results from a 12-event schedule.
Picklum faces strong competition from five-time world champion Carissa Moore, who returned to the tour this year after missing the previous season for the birth of her daughter. Moore has claimed two wins in 2026 and sits just behind Picklum in the rankings, with 47,065 points compared to Picklum’s 48,950. Gabriela Bryan is third with 44,865 points.
To strengthen her lead, Picklum aims to reach at least the semi-finals in the Philippines. However, the championship outcome remains uncertain and is expected to be decided at the season’s concluding event on the North Shore at Pipeline in early December.
