Hurricane Isaias caused multiple fatalities and widespread disruption as it swept through the southeastern United States this past weekend. The storm brought sustained winds of up to 105 miles per hour, initially impacting Florida on Friday evening before moving along the Gulf Coast.
Authorities confirmed that four people died in connection with the hurricane. In Escambia County, Florida, one woman died after a tree fell on her home, and another individual succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning after using a generator indoors during the storm, according to the county sheriff’s office. Alabama reported two additional fatalities, with Governor Kay Ivey noting that the hurricane’s strong winds caused extensive damage by toppling trees and cutting power across the state. A deputy from Dale County, Alabama, assisting with rescue efforts, survived with minor injuries after a tree struck his vehicle.
The hurricane also caused significant travel disruptions across the country. Nearly 300 flights were canceled, and over 800 experienced delays due to the storm’s impact, affecting passengers nationwide.
Emergency responders and officials continue to assess the damage and address power outages resulting from the storm’s passage. The National Weather Service had issued warnings and urged residents in the path of Isaias to seek shelter and take necessary precautions as conditions deteriorated.
