The husband of a general practitioner who provided medical care to members of the British royal family has appeared in court charged with her murder. Dr. Hannah Cain, also known professionally as Dr. Hannah Terry, was found dead at her home in Fern Hill, Dersingham, Norfolk, in the early hours of October 4.

Mark Cain, 45, appeared via videolink from prison at King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8, accused of the murder of his wife, which is alleged to have occurred during the night of October 3 into the morning of October 4. Prosecutor Steven Ball told the court that the couple’s three sons, aged eight, 11, and 13, were in the house along with two other children aged eight and ten who were there for a sleepover.

Emergency services responded to a call early on October 4 and discovered Dr. Cain unconscious and unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom. A postmortem examination revealed that she sustained blunt force injuries to the head and neck injuries consistent with compression to the neck. The prosecution indicated that the injuries suggested both blunt force trauma and strangulation.

Mark Cain, who was seen with superficial cuts, reportedly told police he had confronted an intruder in the house shortly before emergency services arrived. However, no plea was entered during the court appearance, and no application for bail was made. The presiding judge, Mr. Justice Lickley, remanded Cain in custody pending a plea hearing provisionally scheduled for December 3 at Norwich Crown Court. A provisional trial date has been set for June 7, 2027.

Dr. Hannah Cain had been a general practitioner for several years, previously working at the Heacham Medical Practice before joining Grimston Medical Centre. She was part of a rota providing medical cover to members of the royal family during their stays at the nearby Sandringham Estate, located just over a mile from her home. The property, purchased jointly by the couple in 2021, is situated within the 20,000-acre royal estate.

Outside court and at her home, several tributes have been left by family, friends, patients, and colleagues expressing shock and mourning. Through a police statement, her family described her as kind, generous, and loving, emphasizing their grief and requesting privacy during this difficult time.

Authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dr. Cain’s death, while the upcoming court proceedings are set to provide further details on the case.
