Former Australian cricketer David Hussey has taken a leading role in launching a new development program aimed at nurturing young cricket talent in Victoria. The initiative, Melbourne Cricket Academy International, seeks to apply Victorian coaching methods and expertise to help players refine their skills both locally and eventually overseas.

Set to commence on October 26, the subscription-based academy targets players aged 12 to 18, offering a structured environment for training and development outside traditional pathways. Hussey, serving as the coaching director, will collaborate closely with chief executive Liam Murphy, alongside experienced coaches Greg Shipperd and Julien Wiener, who will contribute their expertise to the program.

Hussey emphasized the program's focus on skill improvement under a "Victorian banner," describing it as an opportunity for young athletes to engage with quality coaching resources. Unlike existing pathways, the subscription model encourages players to attend sessions specifically devoted to enhancing their cricket abilities, with an eye toward advancing their careers at regional and national levels.

The academy sessions will be held primarily at Junction Oval and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with aspirations to expand the program internationally. Hussey noted plans to bring the Victorian coaching model to India, aiming to establish a partnership in Bangalore that would extend the academy’s reach and influence.

“Our goal is to develop young Victorian players the Victorian way,” Hussey said, highlighting the program’s intent to cultivate talent that could progress into higher-level competitions, including potentially representing Victoria or Australia. He added that the initiative also hopes to foster international stars and elevate the overall standard of the game through its training model.

By blending local expertise with an innovative approach to youth development, Melbourne Cricket Academy International aims to provide a pathway for aspiring cricketers to fast-track their growth and achieve their sporting ambitions.
