Jamie Bell, the British actor who first gained international recognition at 14 with his lead role in *Billy Elliot*, is starring in a new historical drama centered on the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. The film, directed by Paul Greengrass, features Bell alongside Andrew Garfield and explores the uprising against the ruling elite during the reign of Richard II.
Now 40, Bell reflects on the persistence of self-doubt throughout his career, which began in earnest with *Billy Elliot* in the year 2000. Despite early uncertainty about his commitment to acting, Bell has built a diverse and notable body of work, appearing in films directed by prominent filmmakers including Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Peter Jackson, Lars von Trier, Bong Joon Ho, and Andrew Haigh. His roles range across genres and styles but consistently demonstrate a grounded and intense presence, often anchoring the films alongside more flamboyant leads.
In the new film, Bell portrays John Ball, the radical 14th-century priest and revolutionary whose impassioned speeches helped fuel the Peasants’ Revolt. Bell describes his character as a fiercely intelligent man whose physical appearance reflects both the hardships he endured in prison and his role as a provocative agitator. “His weapon was his brain,” Bell said, noting the deliberate choice to depict Ball with visible veins and battle scars to emphasize his resilience and firebrand nature.
Bell admits he was unfamiliar with the historic revolt prior to reading the script. For him, the themes of social inequality and political rebellion resonate powerfully in today’s climate of economic disparity and widespread public unrest. “The disparity between those who have and those who have not has never been greater,” he said. “It feels as if we are at this tipping point… There’s only so much that people can take.”
The film’s US release stirred some controversy due to its retitling as *The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood*, alongside marketing that emphasized Garfield’s character as a Robin Hood figure. Bell cautioned that the movie is not meant to be a Robin Hood origin story, but rather an exploration of how political activism inspires successive generations. “That’s hard to put on a poster,” he noted.
Bell also revealed that he generally avoids watching his own performances, finding it an uncomfortable experience. His self-critical attitude, he says, has only intensified with age. “I always feel like the fraud in the room,” he explained. “And as you get older you think, this is absurd—I’m 40 years old!”
Residing in Westchester County, New York, with his wife, actress Kate Mara, and their two children, Bell has continued to embrace challenging and varied roles. His recent work includes *All of Us Strangers* and the Netflix production *Half Man*, both of which received praise for his nuanced supporting performances. As he embarks on this latest project, Bell’s journey from child star to seasoned actor underscores a career defined by resilience and a persistent search for artistic authenticity.
