Amber Powe, 31, from Whitehaven, Cumbria, benefits from a flat monthly fee that covers rent, gas, electricity, and wifi at the Eltermerre Inn in Elterwater, where she is employed.

Powe’s arrangement is unusual in a region known for high rental costs, which can often pose a financial challenge for residents. By living in staff housing provided by her employer, she saves approximately £6,000 annually compared to renting privately in the Lake District, one of the UK’s most sought-after beauty spots.

In discussing her experience, Powe noted that such live-in positions are typically found in sectors like hospitality, care work, and childcare. She explained that individuals apply and interview for these roles with the expectation of provided accommodation if successful. “If successful, there will be a room waiting for you,” she said.
