During President Joe Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign, a prominent Asian-American fundraiser has voiced concerns over what he describes as the Democratic Party’s treatment of minority supporters as racial symbols rather than individuals. The fundraiser, who played a leading role in mobilizing Asian-American donors, says he was relegated to a narrow identity category that overlooked his diverse perspectives and priorities.
In a recounting of his experiences, the fundraiser highlighted a February 2024 event where Shekar Narasimhan, chair of the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Victory Fund, posed a highly flattering question to President Biden, which he characterized as a scripted display of loyalty rather than a genuine inquiry. According to the fundraiser, such exchanges are common in Democratic National Committee (DNC) events, where access and political favors often replace substantive dialogue.
The fundraiser criticized several identity-based organizations, including the Black Lives Matter movement, NAACP, Latino Victory Fund, Planned Parenthood, and the Human Rights Campaign, alleging that these groups prioritize leadership enrichment and fundraising over tangible improvements for the communities they represent. He cited frequent solicitations from Bel Leong-Hong, co-founder of the AAPI Victory Fund, describing fundraising events as costly opportunities for donors to gain political access rather than meaningful engagement.
He argued that this pay-to-play culture has become entrenched within the Democratic Party, framing it as a modern extension of longstanding political patronage systems. The fundraiser asserted that by compartmentalizing society into increasingly narrow identity groups, the party has transformed diversity from a unifying strength into a divisive and monetized tool.
The fundraiser also recounted his own experience within the party structure, noting that he was assigned to the DNC Ethnic Council in 2016 and approached about joining the AAPI Caucus, despite feeling his views diverged markedly from the typical positions associated with that group. He described this as a form of racial profiling, with the party focusing on superficial heritage rather than individual ideology.
In May 2024, during a Biden fundraiser at the Mayflower Hotel co-hosted by the fundraiser, the event featured a performance of traditional Chinese lion dancers, which he said was imposed without consultation and did not reflect his or many Asian Americans’ cultural experiences. He described the spectacle as a distraction that precluded a meaningful policy discussion and reduced the participants to a stereotypical display of multiculturalism.
The fundraiser expressed pride in his Chinese heritage and conservative values but emphasized his assimilation into American culture. He lamented that the Democratic Party’s approach prevented recognition of this identity as viable, effectively marginalizing him behind symbolic displays rather than including him as a full participant in American political life.
