An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a motorist during an enforcement operation in Houston on Tuesday, according to a statement from ICE. The individual who was shot has been identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, described by ICE as a Mexican national in the United States without legal authorization.
ICE officials stated that the incident occurred during a targeted enforcement operation in which officers attempted to stop Salgado Araujo’s vehicle. According to the agency, the man allegedly rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, ignored multiple verbal commands, and used his vehicle as a weapon in an effort to run over an officer. The ICE agent responded by firing their weapon in self-defense. Salgado Araujo was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Ronaldo Salgado, who identified himself as the son of the deceased, told Telemundo Houston that his father was seeking workers for hire at the time of the shooting, casting the incident in a different light than the ICE account.
Reuters has not independently verified the immigration status of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo or the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The incident is under investigation as officials seek to clarify the events leading to the use of lethal force during the federal operation in Houston.
