Identical twins Bill and John Bowdler have spent their entire lives side by side, sharing not only a home but also careers and daily routines for more than eight decades. Born in March 1944 in Birmingham, the brothers have maintained an unbroken bond since their births, arriving just 20 minutes apart.
Growing up, the twins began working as paperboys before joining a wholesale distribution company in Birmingham after finishing school in 1960. They remained with the firm for 31 years until it ultimately closed. Following this, both transitioned into roles as postmen, delivering mail in neighboring areas for over 17 years. The pair retired simultaneously in 2009.
Residing together in Birmingham, John now selects matching outfits for the brothers each day, continuing a practice started by their mother, Agnes. John explained that he typically wakes first and chooses clothes, which Bill then coordinates, emphasizing their close-knit routine. Neither sibling has ever married, with John noting that their tight relationship left little time to pursue romantic relationships.
Aside from a two-week period when John was hospitalized for appendicitis—the longest they have been apart—the Bowdlers have remained inseparable. Their activities often coincide, including grocery shopping, attending bingo nights, and watching their favorite football team, Aston Villa. The twins differ in one small way: John dislikes brown sauce, whereas Bill favors it on nearly everything.
Despite their advancing age, both brothers remain in good health. They underwent cataract surgery on the same eye at the same time and credit their companionship for helping them stay active. John observed that many of their peers and former classmates live with mobility challenges, but their mutual support allows them to maintain a more vigorous lifestyle.
The Bowdlers’ lifelong partnership has not only shaped their professional lives but also fostered a unique, enduring connection that continues to define their day-to-day existence.
