Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers from the 91st Division’s 551st Brigade have taken control of a large Hezbollah tunnel complex located in Majdal Zoun, approximately 10 kilometers inside southern Lebanon, the military announced Sunday. The tunnel extends 200 meters in length and reaches a depth of 25 meters, featuring four firing shafts used by Hezbollah to launch rockets into Israeli territory.

According to the IDF, the firing shafts were difficult or impossible to neutralize through airstrikes alone but can now be addressed directly following their capture. During the operation to seize the tunnel, the IDF reported that it killed 20 Hezbollah fighters, including 10 members of the group’s elite Radwan Force.

In addition to the tunnel itself, Israeli forces seized or destroyed around 50 pieces of terrorist infrastructure and munitions. These included drones, antitank missiles, and various lookout positions. The IDF released video footage showing some of the large and powerful rockets recovered, along with images produced by the Yahalom special unit of the Combat Engineering Corps that revealed 12 distinct rooms and sections designed for different terrorist activities within the tunnel.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir emphasized the continuing threat despite a recently declared ceasefire, describing it as “shaky” and underscoring the importance of maintaining high readiness to quickly resume offensive operations if necessary. “All of the IDF’s resources are dedicated to this,” Zamir said.

Reflecting on lessons drawn from the October 7 massacre, Zamir stated that Israel would no longer permit its adversaries to build up forces at its border undetected. He highlighted that the IDF had placed Hezbollah on the defensive not only by securing the Majdal Zoun area and its tunnel network but also by controlling the surrounding regions, including tunnels near Ali Taher Ridge and Beaufort Castle.

Zamir also acknowledged the 401st Armored Brigade for its continual readiness to engage on multiple fronts, from Gaza to Lebanon, despite recent losses among its senior commanders.
