Spanish engineering consultancy IDOM has been contracted to provide detailed engineering design services for the 500 MW Al Kamil Solar I Independent Power Project (IPP) in Oman’s Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. The assignment was awarded by China’s Shanxi Installation Group, which holds the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the project, secured in July 2026.

IDOM’s responsibilities include detailed engineering work and initial site studies crucial to successfully advancing the utility-scale photovoltaic facility. The company’s multidisciplinary team will collaborate with Shanxi Installation Group to ensure the development of an efficient, reliable, and high-performance solar power installation.

The Al Kamil Solar I project is being developed by a consortium formed by France’s EDF Power Solutions, Oman National Engineering & Investment Company (ONEIC), and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), the renewable energy division of OQ Group. The solar farm, located in the Al Kamil W’al Wafi area, will generate electricity under a long-term power purchase agreement with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP).

The project marks a significant step in Oman’s expanding renewable energy sector and reflects the country’s efforts to transition towards cleaner electricity generation. The agreements for the development were finalized in June 2026 during His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s visit to France, highlighting the role of international partnerships in advancing Oman’s clean energy goals.

With an estimated investment of approximately RO 100 million (around $260 million), the solar plant will cover an area of about 4.7 million square meters. The consortium led by EDF is responsible for financing, constructing, owning, operating, and maintaining the facility.

Shanxi Installation Group’s EPC contract encompasses engineering, procurement, supply of equipment, construction, installation, grid connection, testing, and commissioning. In addition, the firm will provide operation and maintenance services for two and a half years following the project’s completion.
