Idris Elba was officially knighted by King Charles in a ceremony held at Windsor Castle, receiving the honour for his contributions to young people. The investiture event took place on June 4, where the actor was formally recognized with a knighthood, an accolade previously announced in the King’s 2026 New Year’s Honours list.

Photographs shared by the Royal Family showed King Charles conferring the honour by tapping Elba’s shoulders with a sword as the actor knelt. The investiture ceremony, conducted at Windsor Castle, was hosted by King Charles, with Princess Anne and Prince William also playing key roles. These ceremonies typically acknowledge individuals with knighthoods, damehoods, and other awards based on honours lists released twice annually.

Elba, best known for his roles in series such as "The Wire," publicly expressed his gratitude on social media following the ceremony. Sharing images of himself displaying the medal and holding hands with his wife, Sabrina Elba, he wrote, “We are thankful. The work continues.” Earlier, in January during the screening of "Hijack" season two, Elba described the knighthood as a “real honour,” emphasizing that the recognition was tied to his efforts to support and amplify the voices of young people facing various challenges.

The actor’s engagement with the Royal Family extended beyond the investiture. On May 14, Elba and King Charles jointly took to the DJ booth at a garden party hosted at Buckingham Palace. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the King’s Trust, a charitable organization focused on youth development.

Elba’s knighthood reflects his impact both through his artistic career and his advocacy efforts aimed at improving opportunities and support for young people across the UK and beyond.
