Amit Bunzel, an Israeli paratrooper known for his dedication and leadership, was remembered by family and friends as a young man deeply committed to serving his country. Born and raised in Shoham, Israel, Amit’s path toward military service was influenced by a family tradition of serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), with relatives including his father, Itzik, who served in the paratroopers, as did his uncle and brother.
From an early age, Amit prioritized his military aspirations. While he was not an exceptional student academically, he showed a keen interest in the IDF, choosing to study under teachers with military backgrounds during his time at a yeshiva high school in Petah Tikva. At 16, Amit pursued preparation for Israel’s most elite units, expressing a desire to join the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit. Despite being undersized at 1.68 meters (five feet, six inches) and facing initial rejections, Amit persisted, ultimately joining the paratroopers’ elite reconnaissance unit after completing his army preparatory program at Keshet Yehuda in the Golan Heights.
Training in the paratroopers proved demanding both physically and mentally, yet Amit’s motivation remained high. His sister Noa recalled that despite challenges due to his stature, Amit completed more than a year of rigorous training. He was noted for his leadership and support of others, exemplified during a training exercise at the Wingate Institute where he helped a fellow soldier scale a wall before accepting the option to leave for Shabbat. His leadership abilities were formally recognized at a ceremony in Beit Lid in May 2023, when his commander promoted him to staff sergeant over a younger group of paratroopers.
Beyond military training, Amit showed kindness and readiness to assist others. One notable incident involved him helping push a visitor in a wheelchair, reinforcing a pattern of empathy and service.
Leading up to the outbreak of conflict in October 2023, Amit’s soldiers completed their training and spent time together, including a barbecue at his home in Shoham and a weekend gathering by the Kinneret for Simchat Torah. On the morning of October 7, when the war began, Amit quickly prepared his gear and deployed without delay.
During the ensuing conflict, Amit and his soldiers were engaged in operations defending kibbutzim targeted by Hamas. On his 22nd birthday, November 19, his unit was in Gaza City's Rimal neighborhood, where his soldiers surprised him with a party, reflecting the respect and appreciation he had earned. Following this, Amit returned to the army base at Lachish, where his family visited him toward the end of November. Their last conversation occurred then, prior to Amit and his unit reentering Gaza for further operations.
Amit Bunzel’s story highlights the resolve and commitment of young Israelis serving in frontline units amidst ongoing hostilities. His family and comrades remember him as a leader who combined determination with compassion, embodying the values of service and sacrifice.
