Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota addressed allegations that she married her brother in an effort to help him obtain a green card, calling the claims “insane” during an interview on Wednesday. The allegations, which first surfaced a decade ago on a Somali blog, have resurfaced amid a federal investigation following a recent raid on Omar’s Washington, D.C. residence.
When asked by MSNBC’s Chris Hayes whether there was any truth to the claims of a familial connection to her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, Omar responded, “Not to my knowledge.” She acknowledged the accusations have been fueled by “rightwing conspiracy theorists” and described the original sources as unreliable bloggers who she said found “random people” who claimed she introduced Elmi as her brother—an assertion she categorically rejected.
Omar’s statements came during her first public interview since federal agents executed a search warrant at her home last week as part of an ongoing inquiry. Details surrounding the nature of the investigation and its specific focus have not been publicly disclosed.
The Minnesota Democrat also addressed questions about her financial status following scrutiny over documents that suggested she and Elmi had a combined net worth of approximately $30 million. Omar acknowledged that figure was incorrect and described it as a mistake, subsequently revising it down. She characterized herself as “working class” and living “paycheck to paycheck,” denying any financial wrongdoing.
No charges have been announced in connection with the investigation, and Omar has maintained her innocence throughout. The allegations, including those regarding her personal and financial conduct, remain under federal review.
