Adelaide forward Taylor Walker plans to approach Saturday night’s Showdown against Port Adelaide as if it were his final match in the historic local rivalry. The 36-year-old veteran, who has featured in 27 Showdowns since his debut in 2009, indicated he expects to decide on his playing future before the conclusion of the current season.

Walker has delayed committing to play beyond 2026 in past years, but this season he believes clarity will come sooner. “I think I’ll get a sense myself at some stage,” he said, adding that treating the game as potentially his last gives him a heightened appreciation for its significance.

After recovering from a hamstring injury, Walker has appeared in just two games over the past seven weeks, including a recent home victory over Melbourne. He views the time off as beneficial for maintaining freshness during the season. His comeback was briefly interrupted by a one-game suspension received during his AFL return via the SANFL.

Walker also acknowledged the recent passing of Tony Modra, a beloved former full forward, describing him as “a beautiful man” who meant a great deal to the club and its supporters. “We’re just grateful we’ve got one of the greatest to ever do it still here,” Walker reflected. “I thought I realised how big Mods was until what’s occurred the past week.”

Adelaide currently sits fifth on the AFL ladder with a three-game winning streak, while Port Adelaide occupies 15th place. Despite Port’s position, Walker praised the Power’s competitiveness this season, noting close losses often decided by narrow margins. He also singled out Jordon Butters, who has been leading as stand-in captain during the absence of the injured Connor Rozee.

Walker said he wished he had always approached Showdowns with the mindset that they might be his last, as it deepens one’s sense of gratitude for the event. “It brings this state to life,” he said, underscoring the importance of the match to South Australian football culture.

In team news ahead of the fixture, Adelaide listed defenders Mitch Hinge (ankle), Jordon Butts (calf), and wingman Isaac Cumming (hamstring) as doubtful to play. The Showdown will once again be contested at the Adelaide Oval, providing another chapter in the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.
