A 33-year-old Indiana woman was fatally struck in a hit-and-run incident allegedly involving a driver under the influence, authorities said. The victim, Tamara Thomas, was in a gas station parking lot in Indianapolis on Saturday when she was hit by a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Edwin Alexander Sosa-Gonzalez.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Sosa-Gonzalez, a Honduran national who entered the United States illegally through Texas in July 2021, was driving a gray Honda CRV at excessive speed when he collided with another vehicle. The impact caused his car to swerve over curbs. Thomas reportedly attempted to move out of the way but was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police documents obtained by local media indicate that Sosa-Gonzalez fled the scene but was apprehended several hours later. Officers noted that he exhibited signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol and impaired speech and coordination. A blood test reportedly revealed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.229 percent, nearly three times Indiana’s legal limit.
Sosa-Gonzalez faces multiple criminal charges as a result of the incident. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) filed a detainer on Sunday, signaling the agency’s intention to take custody for potential immigration proceedings.
Tamara Thomas’s father, Tommy Thomas, expressed his grief publicly, stating his desire to provide his daughter—the mother of a young son—with the "most proper burial" possible.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, while community members mourn the loss of a local mother in what law enforcement officials are treating as a serious criminal case.
