Dame Jane Fraser, Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup since March 2021, has overseen a significant turnaround at the banking giant, with shares nearly doubling under her leadership. Fraser attributes the bank’s revitalization to a firm yet fair management style that balances toughness with transparency.
Speaking on her approach to leadership, Fraser emphasized the distinction between being "ruthless" and being "tough." She rejected the label of ruthlessness, describing it as unnecessarily harsh, and instead advocated for direct communication and support. “You have to tell people straight what’s going on because they usually know anyway,” Fraser said. “So speak straight, tell people straight and then tell them how you’re going to help them from there. There’s a big difference between ruthlessness and being tough.”
Fraser’s tenure has involved difficult decisions, including workforce reductions and divestments of certain assets, moves that some critics have characterized as uncompromising. However, investors appear to have responded positively to the strategic restructuring, reflected in the rise in Citi’s stock.
On the subject of gender dynamics in the workplace, Fraser acknowledged challenges but described her response as marked by resilience and humor. She noted that while she has been fortunate to work for companies with strong policies against discrimination, occasional instances of sexist behavior do arise. “If someone’s being sexist then I find treating it with a smile and polite amusement is a far more effective tool than taking offence,” Fraser said. Her approach underscores a pragmatic stance toward navigating workplace interactions while maintaining professionalism.
Since stepping into the role of CEO, Fraser has become one of the most prominent female leaders in the global banking sector. Her combination of strategic decisiveness and candid communication continues to shape Citigroup’s path forward amid a competitive and evolving financial landscape.
