Sian Clifford, known for her role as Claire in the acclaimed series "Fleabag," has taken on a markedly different character in the new film "Lady," portraying Lady Isabella. The role presented a complex and challenging departure from her previous work, demanding Clifford to embrace a figure whose flaws and loneliness drive the narrative.

Director William Abrahams chose Clifford for the part, confident she could navigate the difficult balance of making an unlikable character compelling. Abrahams noted Clifford's ability to evoke empathy even when playing someone with less favorable traits. Clifford herself expressed an immediate connection to Lady Isabella, drawn to the character’s underlying desperation and solitude. However, she admitted the transition to carrying the lead role was daunting, recalling moments when she nearly withdrew from the project due to fear.

Clifford’s journey into acting has been marked by an ongoing tension between performance anxiety and a deep-seated passion for the craft. Raised in Ealing, West London, she began participating in youth theater at the age of six. A pivotal moment came at 15 when she overcame intense nerves to audition for a school production of "Little Shop of Horrors," earning a role that changed her confidence and peer perception. Despite initial skepticism from a guidance counselor about her prospects for attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Clifford succeeded on her third attempt.

During RADA’s orientation week, Clifford formed a close bond with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, also from Ealing, despite their differing backgrounds within the neighborhood. Waller-Bridge later wrote the role of Claire in "Fleabag" specifically for Clifford, advocating for her despite Clifford’s limited television experience at the time. The two auditioned together, and although Clifford felt uncertain about her performance, the "Fleabag" producer Lydia Hampson recognized the chemistry between them, securing Clifford the role. Waller-Bridge, now engaged in developing a TV adaptation of "Tomb Raider" for Amazon Prime Video, continues to praise Clifford’s ability to convey deep emotional complexity with comedic timing.

"Lady" was produced on a limited budget, filmed over 15 days with a small crew at Somerleyton Hall in Suffolk. Clifford’s wardrobe, composed mostly of vintage and borrowed pieces ranging from classic twin sets to 1990s-inspired athleisure, was integral to defining Lady Isabella’s character. The discovery of a tweed suit paired with a Hermès scarf and oval sunglasses helped Clifford and the production team anchor the role’s stylistic identity.

Though naturally self-critical and uncomfortable watching her own performances, Clifford expressed particular satisfaction with her work in "Lady," considering it an improvement over previous roles. She noted that while she might change large portions of her performance in "Fleabag," her sense of accomplishment with "Lady" was greater, reflecting a personal milestone in her acting career.
