Lando Norris secured his first Formula One victory of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, delivering a commanding performance for McLaren at the Hungaroring. Starting from pole position, Norris initially lost the lead to his teammate Oscar Piastri in the second corner but regained it during the pit stops. From then on, he maintained a strong pace, ultimately finishing 15 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen.

Piastri’s race ended prematurely on lap 56 when a gearbox failure forced him to retire. Earlier, the Australian driver had experienced frustration after being blocked and struck by Carlos Sainz of Williams while attempting to lap the backmarker, an incident that elicited sharp criticism from Piastri. Sainz received a five-second penalty after the collision. Despite the setback, Norris’s dominant run in clear air ensured that the race was firmly in his control after his early pit stop.

Mercedes’s Kimi Antonelli made an impressive recovery drive to finish third after starting seventh due to a grid penalty. The 19-year-old Italian extended his lead in the drivers’ championship, now holding a 50-point advantage over teammate Lewis Hamilton and a 59-point lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell. Antonelli’s performance came during what Mercedes described one of their most challenging weekends of the year.

Russell experienced a difficult race after a mechanical issue on the grid saw his car enter anti-stall mode, dropping him to the back of the field in 20th place. Despite a strong effort to recover to seventh, Russell suffered a significant points loss to Antonelli, adding to a season marked by repeated misfortunes. Team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the need for Mercedes to reduce errors as the team heads into the summer break.

Hamilton’s race was also disrupted by a strategic call from Ferrari, which instructed him to take a late third pit stop during a virtual safety car period. This decision compromised his track position behind Verstappen and Antonelli, and despite fresher tires, he was unable to regain those places. Hamilton expressed concern that the strategy had not been optimal.

Norris described his victory as possibly one of his best personal performances, acknowledging a slightly aggressive start but praising the pace he managed throughout the race. Meanwhile, Russell emphasized the mental challenge of enduring a difficult season, stressing his determination to remain positive and continue pushing forward. As the summer break begins, the drivers and teams will look to regroup and address the issues that have shaped this season so far.
