Approximately one in eight pregnant women in England are now diagnosed with gestational diabetes, representing a 60 percent increase over the past five years, according to a recent study by researchers at the University of Edinburgh. The analysis, published in BMJ Medicine, highlights a significant rise in cases, particularly among ethnic minority groups and those living in deprived areas.

Gestational diabetes (GD) occurs when women are unable to produce sufficient insulin during pregnancy, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. While the condition generally resolves after childbirth, it carries increased short- and long-term health risks for both mothers and their babies. Women diagnosed with GD face a higher likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and pre-eclampsia, a serious condition that can cause organ damage during pregnancy. For infants, gestational diabetes is linked to risks such as premature birth, emergency cesarean sections, and changes in birth weight, including the possibility of being born larger or smaller than expected.

The University of Edinburgh study analysed hospital care data from more than two million women who gave birth to 2.8 million babies across 184 hospitals in England between 2018 and 2022. Findings showed that the prevalence of GD rose from approximately one in twelve pregnancies in 2018 to one in eight by 2022. The increase was most notable among Asian women, where rates climbed by 23 percent, and among women from deprived communities, with a 14 percent rise.

Researchers have described the growing incidence of gestational diabetes as a vulnerability within the healthcare system, emphasizing the need for improved preventative measures. Rebecca Reynolds, professor of metabolic medicine, noted the urgency of addressing this trend to safeguard maternal and child health. Early detection of GD is critical, as timely management can reduce associated risks.

Experts also caution that gestational diabetes raises the likelihood that affected women will develop type 2 diabetes later in life, underscoring the importance of long-term monitoring and lifestyle interventions following pregnancy. The study’s authors advocate for targeted public health strategies to address the disparities observed among different ethnic and socioeconomic groups, aiming to better support those most at risk.

As gestational diabetes rates continue to grow, healthcare providers and policymakers are urged to strengthen screening protocols and improve access to care to mitigate potential complications for families across England.
