One Pool, a relatively new national tote betting platform, has demonstrated promising performance since its launch, with data from its first 1,070 thoroughbred races indicating it has matched or exceeded fixed odds starting prices 60 percent of the time. The platform, introduced by Tabcorp on October 3 during Epsom Day, is gaining traction among punters seeking alternative wagering options.
Michael Fitzsimons, Tabcorp’s Chief Wagering Officer, expressed satisfaction with the platform’s progress. He attributed One Pool’s success to deeper pools and greater liquidity, which have contributed to more stable pricing and increased bettor confidence. “It’s about creating more optionality for our customers,” Fitzsimons said, noting that bettors can now choose between fixed odds prices or One Pool prices with improved certainty for securing the best possible odds.
The growth in participation extends beyond simple bets. Fitzsimons highlighted a notable increase in exotic betting activity, referencing $3.6 million wagered on the Flemington quaddie on a recent Saturday. Tabcorp officials continue to closely monitor One Pool’s performance and remain prepared to implement adjustments aimed at enhancing pricing accuracy and stability as additional data and betting patterns emerge.
Despite these positive indicators, some challenges persist, particularly related to World Pool meetings. During last Saturday’s Cox Plate card at Flemington, which operated as a full World Pool meeting, the tote prices paid out lower returns than the fixed odds starting prices across all events. This discrepancy has led to dissatisfaction among certain punters.
Reports indicate that Tabcorp is engaged in ongoing discussions with the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), the co-organizer behind World Pool events in Australia, to address these issues and define the future operational framework of World Pool meetings on the national circuit. The negotiations aim to balance competitive pricing with the benefits of international pooling arrangements.
Overall, while One Pool has marked a notable step forward in the Australian wagering landscape by offering enhanced options and competitive returns, stakeholders are continuing efforts to refine the platform amid the complexities of integrating World Pool events.
