Landlords of a luxury New York City condominium are seeking to recover more than $2 million in back rent from art-world socialite Libbie Mugrabi, who is being urged to sell a valuable Jean-Michel Basquiat painting to satisfy the debt.

Mugrabi, the ex-wife of billionaire art dealer David Mugrabi, reportedly owes $2.3 million in unpaid rent for a condo at The Park Mansion, a Beaux-Arts building located at 320 East 82nd Street in the Yorkville neighborhood. According to court filings in Manhattan Supreme Court, Mugrabi leased the $28,000-per-month unit for less than a year, from 2019 until 2020. Although her lease expired in November 2020, she ceased making rent payments as early as April 2020.

The landlords initially obtained a court ruling in 2023 ordering Mugrabi to pay $1.8 million in outstanding rent. However, they pursued further legal action in June, seeking the balance plus accrued interest at a rate of 9 percent. Recent court documents filed on October 9 indicate the landlords are now attempting to compel the sale of an untitled 1982 Basquiat painting owned by Mugrabi to recoup the amount owed.

The painting, held at Phillips Auction House, is named as a petition respondent alongside Mugrabi and her company, Moo Moo Enterprises. The artwork’s estimated value has been listed between $4 million and $6 million in the petition. However, a separate legal complaint that Mugrabi filed against Phillips in June suggested a dramatically higher valuation of $30 million for the same piece.

The dispute underscores ongoing financial difficulties faced by Mugrabi amid growing pressure from landlords to address substantial rent arrears tied to the upscale Manhattan property. Litigation continues as the parties contest both the rent claims and the valuation of the Basquiat artwork.
