India marked a significant milestone in its emerging commercial space sector on July 25, when Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital rocket. The launch took place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, and carried multiple customer payloads and in-orbit experiments during its inaugural mission, named “Mission Aagaman.” The rocket’s payload was placed into a 450-kilometer (280-mile) orbit on its first attempt, making India the third country, after the United States and China, to achieve orbital launch capability through private industry.

Skyroot Aerospace, founded in 2018 by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists Pawan K Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, has been at the forefront of India's privatization efforts in space. The success of Vikram-1 represents a breakthrough in the domestic commercial space industry, which until recently was dominated by ISRO, the government-run space agency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi both publicly praised the achievement, highlighting the youthful team behind the project, whose average age is reported to be 28.

The launch was hailed as a major step toward growing India’s space economy, currently valued around $8.4 billion, with government targets aiming to expand it to $44 billion by 2033 and capture roughly 8 percent of the global market for space products and services. Industry analysts, however, caution that Skyroot must demonstrate consistent reliability and cost-effectiveness through additional launches before being able to compete effectively in the international market.

Ajay Lele, a space policy expert, noted that while the initial flight was an important proof of concept, further launches will be necessary to establish Vikram-1 as an operational system capable of attracting global customers. Skyroot’s CEO Chandana acknowledged the difficulty of the task but expressed enthusiasm and confidence following the rocket’s successful deployment of satellites into orbit on its maiden flight.

The development comes amid intensifying competition in the small-satellite launch segment, with established players like Elon Musk’s SpaceX dominating. Small satellites, used for telecommunications, Earth observation, and internet-of-things networks, require either low-cost rideshare opportunities or precise dedicated launches, a market where new entrants like Skyroot aim to carve a niche. While SpaceX has launched thousands of small satellites in recent years, including its own Starlink constellation, countries such as Japan have faced setbacks with private orbital launch attempts, underscoring the challenge involved.

India opened its space sector to private investment in 2020, enabling startups to develop rockets, satellites, and launch services that were traditionally the domain of ISRO. With more than 400 space-focused startups now active in the country, Skyroot’s accomplishment signals both the potential and the hurdles ahead as India seeks to expand its footprint in the global space economy. The country itself has a distinguished space history, being the first Asian nation to orbit Mars in 2014 and, more recently, achieving a lunar soft landing in 2023 as only the fourth country to do so.
