India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, has indicated that the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is expected to be signed and become operational within the next four to five months. Speaking at an India-Germany business roundtable, Goyal encouraged businesses from both countries to begin proactive preparations to capitalize on the forthcoming trade pact.
The minister emphasized the importance of companies starting early engagement activities such as identifying potential customers and partners, exchanging product samples, aligning on quality standards, and discussing pricing strategies. He noted that such groundwork would enable businesses to quickly leverage the advantages of the agreement once it is implemented.
The India-EU FTA, which was finalized earlier this year, is anticipated to move swiftly through the final signing process, with Goyal expressing optimism that it could be concluded before the end of 2023, pending the completion of necessary procedural requirements.
The planned agreement aims to promote closer trade ties between India and the European Union, potentially enhancing market access for goods and services on both sides. Goyal’s remarks highlight the government’s focus on ensuring that Indian enterprises are well-positioned to benefit from the new trade environment, especially in coordination with German industry players.
As the pact progresses toward formalization, stakeholders within the business community are urged to prepare for changes that could reshape bilateral trade flows, supply chains, and investment dynamics between India and the EU.
