India’s first privately developed orbital rocket successfully completed its maiden flight on Saturday, marking a significant milestone for the country’s emerging space sector. The Vikram-1 rocket, constructed by the private aerospace firm Skyroot Aerospace, launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, aiming to place small satellites into low-Earth orbit.

Standing about as tall as a seven-story building, the Vikram-1 is designed to carry payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms (771 pounds). The rocket’s inaugural mission carried a variety of experimental payloads, including a lab-grown diamond, robotic arms intended for space debris removal, and a miniature 18-karat gold rocket bearing small sculptures of notable Indian scientists Vikram Sarabhai, CV Raman, and former President and aerospace engineer APJ Abdul Kalam.

The successful launch was hailed as a breakthrough for India’s private space sector, which has expanded rapidly since policy shifts in 2020 allowed private companies greater participation in the country’s space activities. Today, India hosts more than 400 space startups, reflecting a growing market estimated at around $8.4 billion.

Pawan Goenka, chairman of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre, the government body overseeing private space activities, described the achievement as exceeding expectations for a first orbital launch by an Indian private company. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the event “a defining moment in India’s space journey,” adding that increased private sector participation was “opening new frontiers and accelerating innovation.” Modi also emphasized the inspirational potential of the mission for young innovators across India.

The launch drew praise from senior government officials and former space program leaders. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar described the success as evidence of India’s space ambitions reaching “new heights.” India had previously garnered international attention in August 2023 when it became the fourth country to achieve a successful unmanned lunar landing, following the United States, Russia, and China.

K. Sivan, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), acknowledged the contribution of private startups in making complex space technologies more accessible. He called the Vikram-1 rocket “one of the most challenging and complex technologies” and said the launch would boost India’s global standing in the aerospace arena. Sivan characterized the mission as a motivational achievement that could encourage further innovation and underscore India’s evolving reputation in the international space community.
