A New York cab driver originally from India has had his U.S. citizenship revoked following his conviction for kidnapping and rape, the Department of Justice confirmed on Monday. Gurmeet Singh, 55, was sentenced in 2014 to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a female passenger in 2011.

The incident occurred in May 2011, shortly before Singh submitted his application for naturalization. According to court records and a victim impact statement presented during sentencing, Singh picked up the woman from Williamsburg and was driving her to her apartment in the East Village when the attack took place. The victim reportedly fell asleep in the vehicle and was then awakened by Singh, who threatened her with a knife pressed against her throat and demanded whether she wanted to live.

Prosecutors detailed that Singh bound, gagged, and blindfolded the victim before forcibly removing her clothes and sexually assaulting her. After the assault, the victim managed to escape the vehicle and sought help from passersby.

The revocation of Singh’s citizenship follows his conviction, as the Justice Department cited the sexual offense committed prior to his naturalization as grounds for denaturalization. The case highlights ongoing efforts by federal authorities to revoke citizenship procured through misrepresentation or concealment of criminal behavior. Singh remains incarcerated, serving his sentence for the 2011 assault.
