India’s cricket board plans to conduct a review of the national T20 team’s recent performances following a series of disappointing results in Ireland and England, according to a senior official. The team suffered a nine-wicket defeat in the fourth T20 match against England on Thursday, giving the hosts an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, with one game abandoned due to weather.

This loss marks India’s fifth consecutive defeat, following a 2-0 series loss in Ireland last month. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will convene after the England tour concludes on July 19 to evaluate the team’s struggles. Devajit Saikia, the BCCI secretary, emphasized that the board is closely monitoring the team’s performance and intends to hold discussions with key players to identify the causes of the recent setbacks.

India, the reigning T20 World Cup champions since their win in March, have experienced a notable decline in form during this current period. In the latest match played in Bristol, India posted a total of 158 runs for seven wickets, a target England comfortably surpassed with nine wickets intact and more than six overs to spare. This followed a heavy defeat in Nottingham, where India was dismissed for just 76 runs, resulting in their largest-ever margin of defeat in a T20 match by 125 runs.

Saikia described the poor run as a temporary phase, underscoring that such fluctuations in performance are not uncommon in international cricket. “We consider it as a purely bad phase,” he remarked, indicating that the current downturn should not be viewed as an abnormal occurrence.

The team’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has had to manage without key players such as pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya due to workload and injury management strategies. Their absence has been noted as a factor affecting the team’s overall balance and performance during recent matches.

The upcoming review by the BCCI aims to analyze all these factors and determine the best approach to help the Indian T20 squad regain its winning momentum ahead of future fixtures.
