An Indonesian court sentenced dozens of Indian nationals to prison for their involvement in an online gambling operation on the island of Bali. The sentences were handed down Wednesday following a case related to activities that took place over the past year.
In February, police arrested 39 Indian citizens at two separate villas on Bali, a popular resort destination. Authorities charged 35 of those detained with operating and promoting an online gambling site, accusing them of managing transactions and maintaining the platform since late last year. The group had entered Indonesia on tourist visas.
Under Indonesian law, gambling is prohibited, with legal penalties applicable not only to participants but also to bookmakers and individuals involved in promoting gambling content online. During the trial, presiding judge Putu Gde Novyartha found the defendants guilty of engaging in illegal gambling activities.
Most of the accused received prison sentences of two years, while two individuals were handed longer terms of two and a half years. The case highlights Indonesia’s strict enforcement of its gambling laws, particularly in tourist areas such as Bali, where authorities have increasingly targeted illegal online betting operations.
