A 19-year-old woman was taken into custody Monday evening following the discovery of a 4-month-old infant’s body in a dumpster in South Los Angeles, authorities reported.
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded around 10:30 p.m. to a call near the intersection of Alba Street and Long Beach Avenue after a passerby found the unresponsive infant inside a trash receptacle. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the scene for a reported cardiac arrest and transported the child to a nearby hospital, where the infant was later pronounced dead.
The LAPD’s Abused Child Unit of the Juvenile Division joined the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. Detectives identified the suspect as Takiyah Babers, a Los Angeles resident and the mother of the deceased child. Babers was arrested on suspicion of murder, and her bail was set at $2 million. The case is to be referred to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office for prosecution.
Neighbors in the area identified the suspect as their foster daughter. Herman Johnson and Laura Lacy, who live nearby, told local outlets that they had cared for Babers and believed the infant was her child. Lacy expressed shock and sorrow, questioning the motive behind the incident.
The infant was discovered by a resident who was taking out trash at the time. She spotted a black cloth bag inside the dumpster and initially thought it contained a doll. Upon realizing it was an infant, she and another neighbor promptly contacted emergency services.
Authorities continue their investigation into the case to establish further details about the circumstances that led to the infant’s death.
