Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against social media influencer Amir Shokeen in connection with an alleged racial harassment incident involving a man from Tripura. The complaint follows the circulation of a video on social media that reportedly shows the individual being subjected to racial abuse and humiliation. The case was also filed with Tripura Police, highlighting the broader concern across states.
The controversy escalated after the Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSFD) lodged a formal complaint seeking immediate police action and investigation into the matter. The Forum’s complaint described the video, which was shared on Instagram, as containing racially derogatory remarks and depicting the individual from Tripura being subjected to sexual assault, harassment, and degrading treatment.
Delhi Police officials confirmed that the FIR against Shokeen was registered on Thursday following these complaints and public outcry. The issue gained further attention when Union Minister Kiren Rijiju raised it on social media, calling for accountability.
In response to the backlash, Shokeen issued an apology, stating the video was scripted and intended as humorous content. In a Facebook post, he clarified that the man featured in the video was known to him and had previously worked at a friend’s café in Ahmedabad. Shokeen asserted there was no intent to offend or insult anyone.
This is not the first occasion on which Shokeen has faced legal action. Authorities confirmed that earlier FIRs citing Sections 323 (causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code have been lodged against him.
The incident has drawn attention to issues of racial sensitivity and online conduct, prompting calls from various groups for stricter accountability of social media content creators. The Delhi Police continue their investigation as public debate over the incident unfolds.
