Jakob Ingebrigtsen narrowly missed out on gold in the 5,000 meters at the World Road Running Championships held in Copenhagen on Sunday, finishing second to Eritrea’s Dawit Seare. The race unfolded at a brisk pace, initially led by French runner Flavien Szot before a series of lead changes throughout the competition.

As the athletes approached the final kilometer, Ethiopia’s Mezgebu Sime surged to the front, extending the field behind him. Seare rapidly responded, moving alongside Sime and then breaking away in a decisive move. Ingebrigtsen, 21, mounted a strong late charge, closing a significant gap in the closing stages and overtaking Seare within the last 200 meters. However, his effort proved short-lived; Ingebrigtsen began to fade with about 100 meters remaining, allowing Seare to regain the lead and secure victory by a narrow margin.

Seare crossed the finish line with a national record time of 12 minutes, 56 seconds. Ingebrigtsen also set a national record for Norway, completing the distance in 12:59 and earning the silver medal. The podium was completed by Seare’s compatriot Saywon Amanuel, who clocked a personal best of 13 minutes flat.

The results highlighted a thrilling conclusion to a highly competitive event, showcasing emerging talents from Eritrea and Norway while underscoring the depth of distance running talent across multiple nations.
