The inquest into the death of Maddy Cusack, the 27-year-old Sheffield United footballer who died in September 2023, has been adjourned until December 7 following the emergence of new evidence. Originally expected to conclude this week, the hearing will now pause for approximately five months, with an estimated three additional days of testimony scheduled upon its resumption.

Cusack was found deceased at her family home, prompting an inquest that began last week. The coroner expressed regret over the delay and indicated that the continuation of the proceedings depends on the availability of Sheffield United’s legal representative. If the inquest resumes on the proposed date, it will occur nearly 1,200 days after Cusack’s passing.

During the recent session, the focus was primarily on Sheffield United’s medical personnel and the club’s record-keeping practices. The coroner signaled a need to recall former club doctor Dr. Subhasis Basu as well as former physiotherapist Francesca Carr to provide further testimony.

Cusack’s family has expressed concerns about her mental health, suggesting that it declined following the appointment of Jonathan Morgan as head coach in February 2023. Morgan has denied any wrongdoing in connection with these claims. Sheffield United commissioned an independent investigation in December 2023 which found no evidence of misconduct. Subsequently, the Football Association initiated a separate inquiry in January 2024, the outcomes of which have not been disclosed.
