An inquest has been opened into the death of 13-year-old Palvasha Akbar, who drowned in the River Wharfe at Burnsall, North Yorkshire, on May 31. The hearing took place at Northallerton Coroner's Court but was subsequently adjourned.

Palvasha was among 17 individuals who lost their lives in open water incidents during the heatwave that affected the region in May. According to court information, she encountered difficulties while swimming in the river, which ultimately led to her drowning.

The inquest remains ongoing as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
