MIAMI — Inter Miami secured a 3-2 victory over Chicago Fire on Wednesday night, spoiling Robert Lewandowski’s Major League Soccer debut with the Fire. The match marked a milestone for Preston Plambeck, who scored his first career MLS goal in the 87th minute, while Luis Suárez contributed two goals to help Miami extend their winning streak to five games.

The Fire initially took the lead in the 18th minute on an own goal by goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo. Miami defender Ian Fray’s slow back pass allowed the ball to slip past Ríos Novo, who failed to control the attempted first-touch clearance. Miami responded in the 27th minute when Suárez converted a penalty kick to level the score at 1-1.

In the second half, Puso Dithejane, substituted on for Philip Zinckernagel in the 62nd minute, scored his first MLS goal with a precise first-touch finish inside the penalty area, tying the game 2-2 in the 67th minute. The decisive goal came late in the contest when Plambeck headed in Suárez’s rebound after the Uruguayan’s shot was parried by Fire goalkeeper Chris Brady.

Lewandowski, 37, signed with Chicago Fire on June 29, but his debut was delayed due to a postponed match against Vancouver, originally scheduled for Thursday but moved to Oct. 6 because of poor air quality in Chicago. The former Bayern Munich striker, known for his prolific scoring record including a league record 41 goals in the 2020-21 Bundesliga season, was unable to lead the Fire to victory as the team’s three-game winning streak ended.

Inter Miami improved to a 10-2-4 record, while Chicago Fire fell to 8-5-2. Notably, Miami did not have Argentina internationals Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul in the lineup, as both continue to recover following their World Cup final loss to Spain on Sunday.

In other team news, Chicago Fire’s leading scorer Hugo Cuypers, 29, who is tied for the MLS lead with 13 goals this season, is set to transfer to Mexican club CF Monterrey for a reported $7.5 million.
