A growing number of middle-aged travellers are rediscovering the classic European rail journey known as Interrail, revisiting routes from their youth or embarking on such trips for the first time. Unlike earlier generations, these travellers now prioritize comfort, often opting for hotel stays instead of hostels and using wheeled suitcases in place of backpacks.

One couple recently undertook a 12-day Interrail trip across several European countries, beginning with a direct train from London to Milan. They chose first-class tickets, paying a modest premium of £90 for additional amenities such as extra legroom on the ten-hour journey. Upon arrival, they spent time exploring Milan’s landmarks including the renowned Duomo cathedral and upscale shopping galleries before continuing their travels by train.

Their next destination was the northern Italian region of Trentino, specifically the town of Riva on Lake Garda. Italy’s largest lake, stretching 32 miles and set against the backdrop of the Alpine foothills, served as a scenic base. Staying at the family-run Garda Suite Hotel, the travellers enjoyed lake views from their balcony and access to hotel amenities like a heated swimming pool. Local attractions easily accessible with the Garda Guest Pass—free for hotel guests—included the panoramic Apponale Tower and the Bastione funicular.

The itinerary featured outdoor activities such as hiking the Ponale Path, a mountain trail with steep drops overlooking Lake Garda’s turquoise waters, as well as wine tasting at the nearby Comai vineyards and a sunset sailing excursion. The local skipper highlighted the lake’s depth of 350 meters and its ecosystem, including freshwater sardines and pike.

Continuing their rail journey, the travellers passed through Germany and Austria before arriving at Slovenia’s Lake Bled. Known for its smaller size compared to Garda, Lake Bled is encircled by a four-mile walking path and features a fairy-tale island complete with a church. Visitors can rent boats to reach the island, although rowing can be physically demanding. To unwind, the couple stayed at the Bled Rose spa hotel, which offered a hot tub for recovery after their excursions.

While Lake Bled remains a popular stop for tourists, nearby Lake Bohinj, situated within the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park, remains less crowded and favored by locals. Signposted trails and natural surroundings provide a quieter alternative for visitors seeking tranquility.

This resurgence of Interrail travel among midlifers illustrates a blend of nostalgia and modern comfort, facilitated by flexible rail passes that allow journeyers to hop between multiple destinations affordably and conveniently. The experience offers an appealing way to explore diverse landscapes, historical towns, and natural beauty across Europe’s varied regions.
