In 2007, a sophisticated theft targeting a Verizon data center in King’s Cross, London, resulted in the theft of computer chips valued at £5 million, with the data contained on them reportedly worth around £100 million. The complex heist, led by career criminal Terry Ellis, involved elaborate planning and the use of fake police uniforms, vehicles, and trained dogs to bypass the facility’s extensive security measures.

Ellis, who previously engaged in various criminal activities including armed robbery and drug trafficking, described the operation as his “criminal Mount Everest.” According to Ellis’s account, the stolen data was highly sensitive banking information sought by a clandestine group of bankers connected to illicit financing activities. The data center housed unique servers whose contents were not backed up elsewhere, a significant vulnerability that Ellis and his team aimed to exploit.

The Verizon facility itself was heavily secured, featuring multiple layers of protection including reinforced steel doors, bulletproof glass, biometric hand-scan entry systems, airlock vestibules, and continuous surveillance by security personnel and external contractors. The building was monitored round the clock by guards, security cameras, and nearby police stations that could be summoned within minutes. Inside, the data rooms were under 24/7 CCTV surveillance controlled by a private security firm.

Ellis and his associates faced the daunting task of infiltrating this fortress-like environment, requiring a ten-member team including technicians and a specialist skilled in data extraction. Their objective was to physically remove 80 servers without damaging the data stored on them and transport the servers to a secure location. The group was contracted to carry out the robbery for £1.5 million, equivalent to approximately £3.6 million today.

Despite extensive surveillance and reconnaissance efforts over several weeks, the team struggled to identify weaknesses in the complex’s defenses. One member managed access to the rooftop via swimming across Regent’s Canal, exploiting a camera blind spot, though this route yielded no viable entry.

Ellis recounts that a critical breakthrough came unexpectedly, though details remain limited. He emphasizes that they avoided the use of firearms during the operation to minimize the risk of severe legal consequences, relying instead on physical training and deception.

The stolen data’s extraction was driven by a “fixer” representing a group of bankers linked to questionable financial deals, possibly connected to the global subprime mortgage crisis that erupted shortly after the heist. The fixer stressed the need for the operation to appear as a routine opportunistic robbery to avoid drawing suspicion.

In the years following the incident, Ellis has reformed, spending time at HMP Grendon, Britain’s therapeutic prison. The 2007 heist has since attracted considerable attention as an unprecedented case of cyber-related crime intersecting with traditional criminal methods. It has inspired fictional works and underscored the vulnerabilities of data centers that are now critical infrastructure in the global economy and the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence.
