Dutch designer Merel Karhof is showcasing an innovative project that combines wind power and textile creation through her Wind Knitting Factory, a small windmill attached to a knitting machine. The device produces narrow, colorful tubes of fabric, which Karhof adapts into scarves. Currently on a 10-day tour across three U.S. states, the initiative aims to demonstrate the potential of renewable energy in a creative and tangible form.
Karhof began developing the concept as a graduate student at the Royal College of Art in London. The wind-driven knitting machine, originally designed for children, was chosen after several attempts to find a workable mechanism. Her first installation was on a balcony in London, where a dark blue wool tube gradually extended until it touched the ground, illustrating the continuous, untapped power of wind energy.
The tour started on Saturday in Holland, Michigan, as part of the America250 program, a nationwide initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. Following this, Karhof and her Wind Knitting Factory will visit the Mid-America Windmill Museum in Kendallville, Indiana, on September 19, and the Design Museum of Chicago on September 22.
Karhof emphasized the direct connection between natural energy and production, noting that the length of the scarves depends entirely on wind availability. “When there’s no wind, there’s no scarf,” she said, highlighting the variability of renewable energy sources and their impact on output.
The project blends traditional textile techniques with sustainable technology, reflecting Karhof’s interest in making the invisible forces of nature visible and accessible. The Wind Knitting Factory serves both as an artistic statement and an educational tool, encouraging people to consider how clean energy can be harnessed in everyday life.
