The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), allowing Russian athletes to participate once again in major international competitions under their national flag. This decision marks a significant shift following the effective ban imposed in October 2023 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, during which Russian athletes competed only as neutrals without the use of their flag, anthem, or national colors.
The IOC emphasized that while the provisional reinstatement permits the ROC to return to competition, it has not yet restored full protocols such as the official display of the Russian flag, the playing of the Russian anthem, or the use of national insignia. These aspects remain under review as the committee continues to monitor developments.
According to the IOC, the decision to lift the suspension temporarily was made after verifying that the ROC no longer operates in any territories that the committee considers disputed following the conflict. Furthermore, the ROC has committed to selecting athletes who demonstrate adherence to values promoting a peaceful society, including a pledge to respect and uphold peace.
The reinstatement comes amid ongoing international scrutiny over Russia’s actions in Ukraine and associated sanctions affecting the sports sector. The IOC’s move aims to balance the inclusion of Russian athletes with the broader geopolitical context and the organisation’s principles.
At present, Russian athletes may re-enter competition representing their country, but the IOC continues to assess the wider situation regarding full reinstatement of ROC’s traditional rights and recognitions at Olympic events.
