Iran secured a commanding straight-sets victory over Iraq on Tuesday at the 2026 AVC Women’s Asian Continental Championship, winning 25-4, 25-7, 25-5. Fatemeh Khalili and Reyhaneh Karimi led Iran’s offense with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Iraq’s top scorer, Kazhin Jalal Mahmood, contributed five points.

The match took place at the Tianjin Olympic Center Gymnasium in Tianjin, China, where the tournament is being held from August 21 to 30. This event marks the 23rd edition of the biennial championship organized by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) in partnership with the China Volleyball Association (CVA).

Iran began its campaign in Pool A with a 3-1 win over Chinese Taipei before suffering a 3-0 defeat against China. Despite that loss, the team secured a spot in the quarterfinals, which are scheduled for August 27 and 28. The semifinals will follow on August 29, with the bronze-medal match and final set for August 30.

The tournament format allows the top eight teams from the preliminary rounds to advance to the quarterfinals. The 2026 edition carries additional significance as it serves as a direct qualification route for major upcoming international competitions. The champion will earn a direct quota place for the 2028 Summer Olympics, while the top three teams will qualify for the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup.

These stakes come as part of recent structural changes implemented by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), which now schedules Continental Championships in even-numbered years to enhance player welfare and streamline qualification pathways for global events.
