Irfana Khatun set a new national record in the women’s 50m breaststroke at the Max Group 35th National Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Championship held at the Syed Nazrul Islam Swimming Complex in Dhaka on October 30. Representing the Bangladesh Army, Khatun completed the race in 34.57 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 34.85 seconds established by SA Games double gold-medalist Mahfuza Khatun Shila in 2012.
Khatun's achievement marked the culmination of a dominant performance, as she secured victories and set new records in all three women’s breaststroke events over the course of the three-day competition. Her teammate Mukti Khatun claimed the silver medal in the 50m breaststroke with a time matching the former record of 34.85 seconds, while Mukta Khatun from the Bangladesh Navy finished third at 37.00 seconds.
In addition to her individual success, Irfana contributed significantly to a new record in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay. Alongside Mukti Khatun, Summa Khatun, and Jui Akhter, the Bangladesh Navy team lowered the national mark to 9:47.99, improving on last year’s record of 9:50.01 set by the same team.
The Bangladesh Navy maintained their dominant position at the top of the overall medal standings, securing 28 gold, 18 silver, and 13 bronze medals by the end of the third day. The Bangladesh Army followed in second place with 12 gold, 18 silver, and 22 bronze medals, while the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) held third place, collecting two silver and six bronze medals.
