While the festival’s talent team does not attribute their booking decisions to a targeted focus on Irish acts, the increasing profile of these musicians aligns with the festival’s expanded global footprint, which now includes editions in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Paris, India, and Berlin.
One example of this trend is the rapidly ascending band Amble, who secured a slot at Lollapalooza shortly after forming in 2024. The group quickly transitioned from modest pub performances to selling out venues across the United States, demonstrating strong commercial viability beyond their Irish origins. Instrumentalist and vocalist Oisín McCaffrey noted that their new single, “The Swell,” reflects the band’s rapid evolution—from playing smaller rooms to performing for tens of thousands at major festivals. The song is expected to be part of their forthcoming 2027 release and will feature in their Lollapalooza set. McCaffrey, whose family resides in Chicago, expressed excitement about performing in front of a hometown crowd.
The ascent of Irish acts like Amble is attributed in part to a network effect involving agents, managers, and industry partners who pitch emerging talent in response to ongoing market trends. The growing appeal of these artists is underscored by the fact that Amble shares management with established Irish musician Hozier, who has several U.S. dates planned for 2025, including at Fenway Park. The phenomenon is comparable to the rise of Chappell Roan, who went from opening for Olivia Rodrigo to playing before one of Lollapalooza’s largest audiences in 2024.
Festival talent booker Samantha Liardon highlighted that the diverse international appeal of Lollapalooza has expanded significantly in recent years, with the inclusion of acts from markets like K-pop and the Philippines; the Filipino band SB19 will make its Chicago debut this year. Irish acts are becoming a sought-after commodity within this broader strategy due to their growing fan base and sellout capabilities.
Other Irish performers featured on Thursday’s Lollapalooza lineup include Kingfishr, a Limerick trio known for updating traditional Irish music with contemporary influences, performing at 1:45 p.m. on the Tito’s Stage. Belfast-based Chalk will bring their gritty post-punk and industrial style to the BMI Stage at 5:40 p.m. Dublin artist CMAT is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the Airbnb Stage, offering a blend of retro country, pop, and humor. Meanwhile, Galway DJ and producer Kettama will deliver electronic music combining techno, house, and trance at 7 p.m. on Perry’s Stage.
The growing enthusiasm, particularly among younger audiences, reflects a broader appreciation for the authenticity and communal spirit these Irish acts convey through their live performances. McCaffrey suggested that the genuine connection and unprogrammed nature of their shows foster a sense of community among attendees, contributing to the burgeoning popularity of Irish music on the international festival circuit.
